Aesculapian Prom King and Queen Announced Amid Controversy

 

ÝÝÝÝÝÝÝÝÝÝÝ Saturdayís Medical School Prom, the Aesculapian Ball, had concluded with its usual mix of excitement and controversy.Ý Prom Committee President, Chris Ketcherside, said ìI really think that this prom was the best ever.Ý The music was great, the drinks were great, and I think everyone had a really great time.Ý It was great. Really great.î

ÝÝÝÝÝÝÝÝÝÝÝ

ÝÝÝÝÝÝÝÝÝÝÝ Not everything went as smoothly as the Prom Committee had hoped.Ý Foremost in the minds of many is the controversy surrounding the crowning of this yearís Aesculapian Ball King and Queen.Ý Toward the end of the evening, the Aesulapian Prom Court was presented and the new King and Queen, Brian Walsh and Rebecca Shumate, were announced.Ý The crowning of Ms. Shumate seemed to be a shock to many, as fellow classmate Christine Dewitt was considered to be the frontrunner.

 

ÝÝÝÝÝÝÝÝÝÝÝ M3 Stevany Lamphear commented ìYeah, I like couldnít believe it.Ý Michelle and I were like standing there.Ý Michelle, if youíre reading this Bridget says ëHií.Ý Anyway, we were all really excited when they announced the Aesculapian Court.Ý So Michelle was all ëI hope Becky winsí and I was all like ëYeah me tooí but we were both like ëNo wayí right, because we were like sure that like everyone voted for Christy.î

 

ÝÝÝÝÝÝÝÝÝÝÝ The sentiment of support for Ms. Shumate was not universal.Ý M4 and loyal Dewitt cliquemate Priya Luther demanded a recount when the announcement was made.Ý ìLook, Iím just going to go ahead and say what everyone else is thinking.Ý Becky is a nice person, but sheís a first-class dork.Ý Nice girl, big nerd.Ý I canít believe that anyone would actually vote for her, aside from the other dorks in Yearbook Club.î

 

ÝÝÝÝÝÝÝÝÝÝÝ Detached onlooker, Beth Remillong seemed pleased by the result.Ý ìIím tired of these things being just a big popularity contest.Ý Christy was Homecoming Queen this year and a runner up for Aesculapian Prom Queen last year.Ý Itís about time for someone new.Ý Christy is really popular and all, but I voted for Becky because sheís so down to earth.Ý I figured that all the sportos, pommers and cheerleaders would vote for Christy and all the Chess Club, Yearbook Club, and Debate Team would vote for Becky.î

 

ÝÝÝÝÝÝÝÝÝÝÝ The final tally had Ms. Shumate ahead by five votes.Ý Although a recount is pending, Ms. Shumate is enthusiastic about her recent accomplishment.Ý ìI never thought this would happen to me.Ý Not in a million years.Ý Even if the recount shows that Christy won, Iíll still savor these past few days as Aesculapian Queen.Ý I really think that Christy should have won.Ý Sheís such a wonderful person.Ý Weíve had a bunch of classes together and sheís always been really nice to me.Ý Iím sorry that we both didnít get to win.î

 

ÝÝÝÝÝÝÝÝÝÝÝ Ms. Dewitt commented ìTo be honest, I had no idea who Rebecca Shumate was until Priya told me on Saturday.Ý Everyone knows that I deserved to win.Ý You know, Iíll be so pissed off if I lost because the soccer team cut classes the day that we all voted.î

 

ÝÝÝÝÝÝÝÝÝÝÝ The two candidates had an opportunity to talk to each other during the post-prom photo op.Ý ìChristy came up to me and gave me a big hug and congratulated me.Ý We talked for half and hour.Ý I think we are going to be great friends,î said Ms. Shumate of the encounter.

 

ÝÝÝÝÝÝÝÝÝÝÝ Ms. Dewitt said of the encounter ìThat was uncomfortable.Ý I just kept looking at her wondering what possessed her to wear that dress.Ý I kept talking to her while Priya and my other friends made fun of how hideous it was.Ý At least we got a good laugh out of it.î

 

ÝÝÝÝÝÝÝÝÝÝÝ Although the controversy may never be resolved, the Aesculapian Ball was an overwhelming success.Ý Chris Ketcherside commented ìYou canít please everyone.Ý But despite it all, I think things turned out great.îÝ
