Brown History Month Celebrated In honor of the generations of Brown-Americans and their many contributions, The Bearded Dean is honored to be participating in the celebration of Brown History Month. Scattered throughout this issue you will find articles and facts celebrating Brown. Highlights in Brown History It was on this day in 1973 that MU welcomed it's first Brown physician. It was on March 1st, 1973 that Ali Basheer Al-Husain became the first Brown-neurologist at MU; born in India and trained in the Dominican Republic, Ali did not speak a word of English when he started working at University Hospital, thus paving the way for the many Brown-American physicians that now walk our halls.Sanders to Find New Sources of Loan Money The Office of Medical Education has announced that Cary T. Sanders, M3, has become the first student to exhaust the loan capabilities of the All Rank Lists Submitted--Except One Rank lists were recently submitted by all fourth-year medical students in anticipation of the upcoming Match Day. The lone exception, however, was M4 Julia Edlund. Edlund forgoed working on a rank list in order to give herself the extra time to prepare for The Scramble. MU and Hersheys Start Joint Venture Concomittant with celebration of Brown History Month, MU has announced the planned opening of the Brown Culture Center on campus. Said MU Chancellor Brady Deaton, "The new building will be a haven for all of the cocoa people, even white chocolate, which no one likes." Carmento Floyd, wife of MU President Elston Floyd, and former MU basketball standout Rickey Clemons will be on hand to dedicate the new building. Peds Infection Traced Back to Source The Department of Child Health has found the source of the recent rare bacterial infections of three PICU patients. The bacteria, S. aerithrophielas, was found to have originated from Michael E. Burgard’s turtleneck. Burgard will be allowed to finish his peds rotation, announced Dr. Ted Groshong, but will no longer be able to wear turtlenecks under his scrubs. “This is a public health issue,” said Groshong. “Plus, he looked like a real idiot with those turtlenecks.” Where Are The Underclassmen? A recent poll of M3's and M4's in the medical student lounge showed that 99% of upperclassmen believe there are no M1's or M2's, and wonder what use is being made of the old PBL labs. Several people did comment, however, that it was good to see Dr. Freeman continue to sit outside the OME for hours at a time for no apparent reason.
